OVERWHELMING community support means construction on the Casuarina Hockey Club house has reached the halfway mark. Villawood, the developer of the new Miramar community at Casuarina Beach, donated $5000 towards building efforts, while Tweed Coast Christian Church has donated hours of its time.

Last weekend a small army of club members, supporters and a group from the church went to work on the framework and roof cladding of the building, with one final volunteer day set for May 18 to bring the project to lock-up stage.

Hockey club committee member Sharon Buchanan was excited to announce the latest milestone in the club's construction.

"We have been working towards getting the clubhouse to lock-up stage for over 12 months, and to finally have the money and manpower to do that is a fantastic achievement," she said.

Through business donations and local fundraising, including a 'Wall of Fame' campaign allowing supporters to have their names engraved on a wall plaque, the club raised $45,000 towards lock-up. "The whole club is really grateful to Council, all members, volunteers and local businesses like Villawood and Clarence Property for donating their time and money towards this project" Ms Buchanan said.

The club has also recently been approved as a recipient of a State Government grant, which will fund the interior fit out for the building - including a kitchen, meeting room, access ramp, and storage, later this year.

"With the additional money from the government grant, we can complete lockup and are also keen to start on the interior by mid-May, with a view to the whole building being complete and operational by June," Ms Buchanan said.

Villawood development manager Michael Williams said he was thrilled to see the clubhouse progress.

"Casuarina Beach has a wonderful community spirit which was evident over the weekend with so many people helping to bring this project to life - and that's really a big drawcard for new residents looking to call this neighbourhood home."
